Family types – pros and cons

What is better? Living in a small family with only one child or living in a big family with more children? What are the pros and cons of the different family types?

living in a one-child family/ being an only child/ living in a small family:

pros:

• the child gets all the attention and love, there is no need for sharing in anything
• parents are in a better financial position because they have to take care of one child only

cons:

• the undivided attention can be too much for some children
• the parents want their one child to succeed and it comes with a lot of pressure
• being an only child can be boring and one can feel alone
• it is possible that the child will have problems with building relationships

living in a family with more children/living in a big family:

pros:

• children have the capability of sharing and helping
• the social skills can be improved much faster and easier
• children with siblings have someone they can confide in if they don’t want to involve the parents
• siblings can give moral support

cons:

• difficulties can occur in the financials, more children mean higher expenses
• the parents have a hard time giving the children attention and love equally
• sharing things like clothes or even a room can be annoying especially in the case of teenagers
